Woven wraps: Front Wrap Cross Carry

When it comes to babywearing, parents often seek a comfortable and secure method to keep their little ones close while going about their daily activities. Among the many babywearing techniques, the Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC) stands out as a tried and true favorite. This versatile carry offers a snug and supportive fit, allowing caregivers to keep their hands free while nurturing their baby's physical and emotional well-being. In this blog post, we will explore the ins and outs of the Front Wrap Cross Carry and discover why it has become a beloved choice for babywearing enthusiasts worldwide.

What is Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC)?

Front Wrap Cross Carry is a traditional woven wrap babywearing technique that involves creating a supportive and comfortable fabric harness around both the caregiver and the baby. It utilizes a long piece of fabric, typically made of woven cotton or linen, which is wrapped diagonally across the caregiver's torso and then secured by tying a knot or using specialized wrap techniques. The baby is snugly positioned within the fabric folds, allowing for a safe and ergonomic carry.

Step-by-Step Guide to Front Wrap Cross Carry:

  1. Choose the Right Wrap: Start by selecting a woven wrap that suits your preferences and needs. Opt for a wrap made of breathable, supportive fabric with enough length to wrap around your body comfortably.

  2. Positioning: Position the middle of the wrap across your chest and drape the ends over your shoulders. Cross the fabric at the back, bringing the ends forward over your shoulders once again.

  3. Creating a Pouch: create a pouch by pulling the fabric away from your body. Ensure the pouch is wide enough to comfortably accommodate your baby.

  4. Placing Your Baby: Lower your baby into the pouch, gently spreading the fabric across their back and bottom. Ensure their knees are higher than their bottom, forming an "M" shape, which promotes healthy hip development.

  5. Secure the Wrap: Bring the fabric ends down and cross them under baby's bum. Bring them to the back and tie a double knot to secure the wrap snugly.

In the video I'm adding a twist under baby's bum to take the passes away from her little legs and avoid putting pressure on them (this step can be skipped when baby is a bit older).

Advantages of Front Wrap Cross Carry:

⭐It is suitable for newborns as well as older children, offering full body support
⭐ It distributes the weight evenly throughout your whole back and both shoulders (which means it's comfortable and can be used for longer periods of time, e.g. when the baby naps)
⭐It is relatively simple to learn as you can wrap it around yourself partially before putting the baby in and adjusting
⭐Once you are comfortable with this type of wrapping you can do many alterations and finishes
⭐It's easy to breastfeed in it (once the baby is older)
⭐It can be done with your base size wrap
